Speaking anxiety: how to stop being afraid of making mistakes

The fear isn’t about grammar. It’s about judgment. Here are practical ways to lower pressure and speak more.

If you feel “blocked” when speaking, you’re not alone. The brain treats social judgment as a threat.

Make mistakes cheap

Your goal is to increase the number of “attempts”. When mistakes are normal, progress accelerates.

  • Use short messages first
  • Repeat the same idea in two different ways
  • Collect 1–2 “better phrases” each day

Switch the target

Don’t aim for “perfect English”. Aim for “clear meaning”. Clarity first, correctness second.

A helpful mindset: “I’m practicing, not performing.”
